1 I did an invisible tea ceremony and serve tea to the moon(the moon is connected to people in different countries too)
2 I drew 15 circles in circles on a black mattress to put myself in and I was sprayed with black color
3 I covered my face with a hole on my clothe and went back to the same route of 15 circles
4 I hugged the mattress
5 I covered the mattress to the camera
I made this project with two more other Asian friends because of our homesickness.
At that time, there was the full moon festival which origins from Asia. We share to see the most beautiful full-moon of the year. I knew that there would be many people watching the same full moon in our countries so we decided to have a communion through a ritual.
My friend told me that there is a Chinese story about brothers who were separated but they communicated through the moon. And my friend played a song of the story. I felt heartrending. I also want to see my sister but the distance is too far.
We woke up at 3am (the most beautiful one appeared at that time) and did the ritual. After the ritual, we got our smiles back.

Moon Communion with Asian friends
Everyone from Asia around me got homesickness at that time. It may be because of the season of full moon festival. Some people in Asia cerebrate the best full moon once a year, that was the 6th Oct in 2018. We went out 3am to do the ritual. We made a costume from a white cloth with just two holes which reminded me of Haruki Murakami’s 1Q84’s two moons. We made a mattress from black cloth with 14 holes with white circles. And I walked circler used the holes on the clothe and the mattress to cover every 14 days to make the full moon and the new moon. I wanted to communicate with people in my country. At 3am, 11am in Japan. So I imagined every precious people in Japan working, studying, waking or sleeping at the ritual. Outside was very cold and my both barefoot was cold and freezing and I felt my aliveness in UK. I was trying to overcome my homesickness through the ritual. Inspirations were from Marina Abramovic, Yoko Ono’s poetry ’Send a scent to the moon’ and ‘Steal the moon which is reflected on the surface of water’. I made a video out of the performance as a documentation, nevertheless the quality is not good because of the lightning technique.
Yesterday the last night was mid autumn festival day
Tomorrow night at 3:40, full moon will appear so my friends and I will do a ceremony to communicate with family or friends in our countries.
One is from Taiwan, one is from Hong Kong, I’m from Japan
I started to feel homesickness these days
It’s not like this country is boring or i miss family
Just I miss the atmosphere there
In China, there is a song about brothers communicating via the moon
The moon we see now used to be seen by our precious people too
So I want to try communicating by the ceremony
